it’s a really sad story, I’m asking myself why the neighbors didn’t call 911 or try to help her

I just don’t get why they didn’t call the police. People nowadays don’t help but to stand their and record just to get likes on social media. This is just terrible. What a sad world we live in.

I think that this situation its something that still happening, people would rather to watch and know more about what is happening instead to call the police . It’s absolutely unfair, however it’s very common to see cases like that nobody do anything.

I think if you hear or see someone being hurt or watching a problem you should cll the police. if people watched this happen to her I feel as though they are also guilty or they should feel pity because maybe they could’ve saved her if they had called for help.

With modern day technology people are constantly stuck in the bystander effect. People will often film, watch, or even over look injustices. Refusing to intervene due to fear, embarrassment or because it is “Cool” to record or because helping is too much of an inconveinence. I have often watched as cars on Melina Cass have wizzed by, honked or threatened an individual clearly under the influence of narcotics. Doing everything but pulling over to help or assist the individual in need in the middle of the road. We must learn appropriate responses and have a willingness to take action when we’re presented with a situation that requires immediate intervention.

In my opinion, the people that saw what was happening to her and didn’t help are also guilty. They should’ve called the police earlier and went to help her. If anyone had went there to help her, she would’ve survived. Even if she was really drunk, that doesn’t justify the fact that no one went there to help her.

It’s very sad history and it is evil doing crime too. The most sad thing is the people around her room, they didn’t gave any help for her, when she was screaming. As I think why people didn’t response help for her is may be, most of people are selfish. Its amaze me sometimes I don’t know my neighbor after I came America except my family and friends. While 38 people was watching, this bad thing being happen without any help of those people is very shameful to be human being in front of those people. So all the witness and all the people who was watched her when she was murdered should have ask by law. So this video helped as how we can care fo other as humanity when such situation is happen to other and run for help and to call police immediately.

This case is heartbreaking but it brought to the light what happened not just back then but also today. Kitty was seen while being murder and no one helped. Today we have phones, people would rather record a video than actually do something. The bystander effect is something very real and it just shows how the power of our society could lead us into believing that someone will say and do something, yet no one knows who that someone will be. We rely on the fact that there are so many people viewing the same thing as us, that we believe that someone else will do something about it, not knowing that maybe everybody is thinking the same thing and in the end no one does anything. A sad case to prove a point.

This video makes me mad and sad at the same time. I think it’s crazy how plenty of people heard her screams of fear and no one decided to go down a help an innocent girl getting attacked, nor thought it was a good idea to call 911.

This bothered me that people would rather yell from a window than just dial 911. its sad people would rather turn a blind eye to a situation and than make difference and or even save life. really makes me question the world we live in.

I find it sad and shocking that this is a thing. While I understand that people don’t like to get involved in other people’s business, a quick 911 call would be of help to the victim and the person can decide to remain anonymous. I still question the factors contributing to bystander effect. However, I think some factors includes diffusion of responsibility, the presence of other people means the responsibility to take action and help is equally shared among everyone that’s present, the need to behave in a socially acceptable way. In Kitty’s case, People had different reasons for not getting involved especially since it was a crisis and people weren’t clear as to what exactly was going on.

This video shows the sad truth of how modern day has dealt with violence in the public. As technology progressed and society has grown over the centuries, social media has taken a toll on everyday life events. Social platforms like twitter, instagram and facebook are all examples of media that when a post is made it is over widely shared within minutes, for example, if a fight is being broken out in a public area, people instantly reach for their phones to take a video leading that person to become a bystander and basically allowing the violence to continue whether than ending it then following up with posting the video to a platform getting lots of views and shares and for them at the end of the day, the numbers is all that counts rather then the person who got physically hurt.

This video reminded me of this famous rapper’s death when he was found dead in his car and when witnesses saw, the first thing they did was get out their phones and take pictures of the accident and there was only one person who actually went to check his pulse and hurriedly asked for an ambulance to be called.

It’s OK to want to mind your business. But making a 911 call will not identify you in any kind of way. You are as guilty as the person committing the act just by witnessing and being an bystander. How did they sleep at night after watching a women being killed on the street. Mind you some of them are women themselves. Kitty did not deserve to die in such inhuman way or any one else for that matter. She screamed and call for help someone could have save her life while he the man ran the first time but no one did Some assumed she was drunk. This psychopath even raped her while she was in agony. i got sick to my stomach by by listening and trying to put the scene in my head of how cruel human being can be toward one another.

This story of kitty’s murder highlights how people would rather not get involved in any situation that doesn’t affect them. The disappointing part is how they did not bother to help at all, not even calling the police which could have prevented the murderer from returning and finishing the job likely because they thought someone else will probably do it.

Tragic story, cops should have been called, Kitty should have been more aware of a car following her. Bystanders are even more common today, everyone with the phones, posting to social media, instead of helping in some way. This makes me sick. Bystanders will always exist, they are people with no integrity, scared to do something or just too ignorant to realize they should.

Crazy, but I would say it may happen more than we though in the big cities. Unfortunately nowadays people are much more worry about themselves and don’t want to be part of others problems. We are much more Bystander than active people.

Is hard to believe that she could had been so misfortune of having 37 witnesses and no one would do something to help her. There was a misunderstood btw the witnesses, some of them probably didn’t pay much attention to a girl screaming so late at night, she could been drunk or fooling around. but the witness that open and close the door, where she’s found later, that didn’t call the police or do something to help and stop the crime is even more horrific. It was the frightening of what they were seeing that froze them, or they are simple creepier that a murderer that goes out for hunting, to feed his one pleasure. sadly… we hear about those criminals here and there.

The bystander effect can be applied to so many instances, and we see it every day. From helping someone who dropped something, to murder like Kitty’s. I don’t know what the solution is to a people problem like this, how do you encourage communities to say something when they see something? Some people just don’t care, some people think its not my business, some people don’t trust authority. There are so many reasons…

The story is very heartbreaking and disturbing. I just don’t understand why the neighbors did not call the police to help Kitty. It was as simple as picking up the phone and dial the numbers. Calling the police would put themselves in no harm. We cannot blame the neighbors for not physically stopping the man to save Kitty, because no one wants to put themselves in danger. But the fact that they did not call the police, I consider them as accomplices. Also, this tragedy happened in 1964, when women were still very powerless and had low status. Maybe the neighbors thought it was common for a man to rape and attack Kitty.

This story was sad , a woman lost her life and nobody did nothing for help her . The curious thing was that people was heard how she was healing but this bystander effet is difficult to explain because maybe people in the city were afraid about their life , and that murder who wanted to kill a woman that day maybe he was psychologically sick .

it is truly awful how they watched her death occur and did nothing about it. the people believed since there were multiple of them, at least someone else should do something other than them. Kitty was a very open and friendly person and it goes to show how even personality does not matter to the bystander effect. The reason for murder was not justified at all either.

Not a lot has change throughout the years. People really don’t care and that is a sad statement to say. To have 38 people witness a person get stabbed and raped and not do anything is inhuman. I cannot wrap my head around this. The person who ended up helping, although a little late, has a heart. It took hours of this woman suffering for a person to finally give her a hand. Today is basically the same, many people are more worried about upload a live video of a crime scene or an accident than to use their phone for the purpose it was made for to call. It is much harder for a person to help out when there is time to save a person, in which I will never understand why.

This story is truly heartbreaking. Kitty was a young woman minding her own business when suddenly a man jumps onto of her and begins stabbing her repeatedly. What’s even more messed up is the fact Winston suddenly had this compulsion earlier that day to kill a random woman. Although Kitty was screaming, her neighbors payed no mind (however a few screamed out the window at Winston telling him to stop). Winston finally stopped after realizing his face is visible, however as Winston sits there hiding form the police he notices the were not called. While Winston starts stabbing Kitty infant of a door, residents of that apartment would peek at Winston but not interfere. Finally someone called the police, however,r it was too late Kitty died on her way to the hospital. The neighbor’s behaviors were not right. However, I understand that some of the neighbors might have been women who felt like they could not interfere because they could also be at risk. However, I do not understand why no one called the cops (until it was too late), picking up the phone would not harm them.

I already answered the bystander effect in another post but ill just repeat my view on it. A lot of factors come to play when people are witnessing a horrific event especially crippling fear. In the case of Genovese she was dragged and stabbed down a street screaming and then into a hallway where the upstairs tenants opened and closed the doors multiple times to see the guy stabbing her and did nothing i believe the police were called 20-30 minutes after. A Lot of factors come into play to me in this obviously fear of the witnesses and don’t want any problems mentality but in my own personal belief i couldn’t just sit and watch i guess there are two different types of people action vs bystanders but that doesn’t excuse not even calling the cops till after the fact very bizarre events

This is terrible but on the other hand extremely common especially in larger cities, it is not uncommon to see some one on the train or walking down the street possibly intoxicated and starting with innocent people. I am also guilty of this my self there has been times i have spoke my mind to some one disrespecting someone on the train and the outcome was not ideal and usually ends with blows being thrown. But also times i did not say anything as well because i did not want the added drama to go along with it. I feel it comes from misinformation as far as keeping your mouth shut and also fear that you will receive repercussions of the ordeal.

I think the bystander effect is horrible, but I believe it is something that each person succumbs to, due to fear. There have been many situations in which I’ve wanted to intervene, yet I did because I was scared. In these situations , it was only arguments occurring, no ones life was in danger. Had I saw someone being stabbed, I would for sure call the police right away, and figure out a way to help the person being stabbed. It’s sad to think of what could be going through peoples minds when they just sit back and watch peoples lives being put at risk, and in some cases, watching people die, and all they do is stand there. I just don’t understand how you could live with yourself after watching someone be killed, and do nothing about it.

I am deeply saddened by the bystander effect that has happened to such a terrible degree in this situation. I would hope that now more people would call the cops and that some of that turn a blind eye mentality could be attributed to the time being the 60s, but I am not sure. This strongly reminds of the movie we watched and how their culture and neighborhood were also known for keeping quiet and not telling the cops anything. I just wonder how after all of that screaming that she did that that many people could ignore her and not get involved, was it because of the neighborhood?

This type of behavior in big cities isn’t uncommon which is really sad. I think people who live in big cities like NYC, Chicago, D.C., and even Boston suffer from this type of effect. Being from a big city, you see and hear all sorts of crazy things in the middle of the night, where it could be so easy to brush it off cause eventually that noise goes away. I feel that the bystanders in the situation often feel inconvenienced with the “screams” as horrible as that may sound. Some people also don’t want to get involved in situations like this out of fear. Fear that there may be additional stress, pressure, etc, added onto their lives. As sickening as it is, it is a common behavior within communities to keep our mouths shut.

The story is definitely horrifying, but before jumping to any conclusion we should ask what make the killer to do that, he is have something going on in his life, I’m not saying everyone has stress go kill, but seems like he was mentally sick needed help and no one noticed, because by that time or era if you mentally sick you crazy you can’t live between public and people wouldn’t feel see around him, another piece of it from my point of view and understanding kitty had the option what to be and choose to be a business women living in N.Y by that time not a lot of people would have much option or freedom to choose ( freewill). When it comes to the neighbors who were watching the murder I’m also connecting the piece of kitty being successful ( jealous) with the crime and watching they could definitely help but they didn’t wanted to see some one around them that achieved something or a dream. Also my point of view agin is racism is involved some how in this video because back days people hated each other and they used the concept of “minding my own business”. Its heart breaking story.

A lot of excuses people tell themselves when an incident like this happens is someone else will call the police or help the girl, thus taking responsibility off themselves. People might be scared to take action. In a big city like New York people may be used to gang violence and have become emotionally distant toward it. Some people in the video said they thought she was drunk. I’m surprised not a single person called the police, or tried to scare the murderer away. This happened in 1964, but is still very much relevant today. I think awareness of the bystander effect, and understanding what you can do to help can really help stop tragedies like this one from occurring.

It’s crazy that 37 people saw or witnessed the murder and didn’t do anything about it even thought it is so easy to just cal for help. It is also really sad too think about because this woman wanted to achieve so many things before dying meanwhile, this guy had o record or felony just randomly chose her and just killed her . It horrifies me because it shows that this could happen to anyone.

This story is very sickening because stories like this are always happening. There are many times where people are in danger and nobody does anything to help. Bystanders are the worst in these situations because just of the simple fact that you watch something that you know is not right happening around you and you continue on like it’s not happening. I can not believe that there are people who witness horrible things happening to others and they don’t feel it in their hearts to help. People are afraid to get involved to not put their selves at risk and that to me is a very selfish action. Someone should have helped kitty, called the police, did anything to get her out of this tough situation but instead they sat back and watched her get raped and brutally murdered.Although I am not surprised at the situation because most people would rather “ mind their business” than give out a helping hand.

I honestly don’t understand why people wouldn’t have the decency to at least call the police as soon as they realized something was wrong (The neighbor that screamed leave her alone for example) to help that poor woman, how sick is it that the perpetrator was able to get away from the scene, get into his car and since no police showed up for him to go back stabbed her in the throat, sexually abuse her and the neighbor to be opening and closing the door while Kitty was being hurt, I feel so bad for her (the fear that she had to endure while trying to get to her home after being stabbed twice) I understand that many people prefer to act like nothing is happening around them, but so many bad situations could be prevented if people could be just a bit more humane towards others, a simple phone call could had saved her life.

Watching this video broke my heart, its hard for me to believe that absolutely no one went out to help Kitty. I understand why people would be afraid to to help her but I still think its crazy that no one tried. And I agree with the person above that the bystander effect only seems to be getting worse, because now these days people see something going wrong and will immediately begin to record and laugh in the background as if these types of things are okay. It’s scary to think that in case of an emergency no one would be willing to help.

I think this report, other than the emotions and feelings I’m experiencing (of which are obviously shock and sadness), is very interesting in a psychological perspective. Nowadays or in any other situation where this would happen, you would expect that a witness or a neighbor nearby would probably call the cops or notify someone of authority. To me, it’s very surprising that nobody did anything to even remotely help Genevese in this situation. I can understand why the witnesses did not do anything as a part of the bystander effect (we’ve all been in that situation at least once in our lives, I believe), but still nonetheless, this is very tragic.

I was not so surprised that Kitty Genovese didn’t get help from her neighbors because that what we do as an human not putting ourselves in a dangers position someone for someone else. i believe that a sense of conformity is a crucial element to the Bystander Effect. no one wants to stand out, everyone wants to follow the majority for that, someone innocent can gruesomely murdered.

In my opinion someone could have definitely found a way to help Kitty. Even if she seemed to be drunk someone should have stopped and helped. I think her death could have been prevented.

This video is heart breaking. I realized that how peoples negligent behavior will harm others. even though 38 peoples witnessed her murder no one help her at the time of the event. i really feel bad on those peoples who didn’t tried to help her. even they can’t to stop the murder at least calling police will save her life but thy didn’t .

In my point on view I feel like situations like Kitty’ have gone worse. With development of technology people are conducting the bystander effect without knowing it. Instead of people intervening they take out their cellphones and start recording. People are more focused on the publicly that they might receive from the recording than stopping the situation. Now more than ever we must learn the appropriate actions take when we’re presented with a situation that requires immediate action.

An old interpretation of a modern problem. 37 people witnessed her being raped and murder and not 1 individual helped her. The person who held her hand while she died should have just let her be, they could have thiught they were being nice to her but she could have held an imense grudge against that person for only helping her when she is about to die, if they would have done something sooner she would still be alive. In today’s world we see incident like these (not as extreme) all over social media and the news because with smartphones on everyones hand they can start recording and upload to social media for “likes and views” but wont throw their phone at the perpetrator to stop the crime from happening
